Aurora Borealis/ Northern Lights of Iceland
When charged particles from the sun strike atoms in Earth's atmosphere, they cause electrons in the atoms to move to a higher-energy state. When the electrons drop back to a lower energy state, they release a photon: light. This process creates the beautiful aurora, or northern lights.
A personal bucket list item and my major reason for visiting Iceland during winter. I captured this image outside our hostel just outside of Hof, Iceland. It was a faint and rather quick Aurora burst but the joy and awe it filled me with to this day I cannot put into words.
